In 1843, RSA Fellow and British civil servant Henry Cole made history by sending the first ever commercially produced Christmas card. Cole worked with artist John Callcott Horsley to create a card that featured a festive family scene, with a central image of a family celebrating Christmas together. The design included a charitable message, urging people to support the less fortunate during the festive season. This Christmas card depicts Arlington Row, Bibury, Gloucestershire and a group of cottages built from Cotswold stone. These cottages were rescued from dereliction and re-stored by the RSA in 1930. 

Originally illustrated in 1967 by artist Anna Zinkeisen, this card depicts RSA founder William Shipley’s 1751 initiative to counter winter fuel profiteers in Northampton, where he offered fuel at summer prices to support those in need. Embodying the spirit of creativity, social progress, and generosity, this card honours Shipley’s enduring contributions to art and social change.
